What you will learn

Each claim names its source, so you can check it.

  1. Why 1 Enoch 6 gives the Watchers' oath a place — Mount Hermon — a number, two hundred, and a leader, Shemihazah, who fears he alone will bear the punishment; and what the four verses of Genesis 6 leave out.

  2. What Atrahasis says humans were made for — to take over the labour of the Igigi, who went on strike — and why gold is never mentioned in it.

  3. What the Watchers taught, item by item, in 1 Enoch 8 and 69 — swords, cosmetics, the cutting of roots, the signs of the stars, writing with ink — and why Jubilees has angels teach Noah the same remedies as a mercy.

  4. Why the height of the giants depends on the manuscript — three thousand cubits in the Ethiopic 1 Enoch 7 — and why the Dead Sea scroll of Samuel makes Goliath four cubits tall, not six.

  5. The flood, scene by scene: in Gilgamesh XI Utnapishtim releases a dove, a swallow and a raven; Noah releases a raven and a dove — and Genesis itself counts the animals two ways.

  6. What Jubilees 10 adds after the Flood: Mastema's petition, nine-tenths of the giants' spirits bound and one-tenth left — and how that contradicts the Book of the Watchers.

  7. Why the Astronomical Book (1 Enoch 72–82) insists on a 364-day year, where its two-to-one ratio of longest day to shortest night comes from — the Babylonian MUL.APIN — and why that calendar does not work.

  8. Which of the five books of 1 Enoch is missing from the Dead Sea Scrolls — the Book of Parables, with its Son of Man — and the two explanations scholars give for that.

WHY THIS COLLECTION

Genesis gives the Watchers four verses. 1 Enoch gives them thirty-six chapters, Jubilees gives them a different motive, and the Book of Giants gives their sons names.

You can find each of these texts online — separately, in translations a century apart. This collection sets them side by side, in the order the story runs, and says which text each passage comes from.

Where the sources disagree, you hear both versions. Where a reading is the author's own, he says so.

THE SEALED EARTH · WHAT YOU WILL HEAR

Five parts, one story

The Sealed Earth runs fifteen chapters in the order in which the story assembles itself — from the Sumerian king lists to the scrolls found at Qumran in 1947. Each part names the texts it draws on.

  1. PART ONEchapters 1–3

    The World Before Man

King lists that begin before the Flood, the Atrahasis account of why humans were made, and a slow reading of Genesis 1–6 — down to the four verses on the sons of God and the Nephilim. Also what “Anunnaki” actually means, and why the gold-mining story is in no tablet.

SOURCES Sumerian King List · Atrahasis · Enuma Elish · Enki and Ninmah · Adapa · Genesis 1–6 · Berossus · Secret Book of John (Nag Hammadi)

  2. PART TWOchapters 4–6

    The Fall

1 Enoch 6–8 read closely: two hundred Watchers, Shemihazah's oath on Mount Hermon, and the list of who taught what — metalwork, cosmetics, spells, the signs of the stars. Then the giants: what “Nephilim” means, the Book of Giants from Qumran, and why no giant skeleton has ever been found.

    SOURCES 1 Enoch 6–8 and 69 · Genesis 5–6 · Jubilees · Book of Giants · Leviticus 16 · Numbers 13 · Deuteronomy · the Septuagint · Dead Sea Scrolls

  3. PART THREEchapters 7–9

    The Flood and the Seals

The verdict on the Watchers — Azazel bound in Dudael, Shemihazah's company for seventy generations — then the flood in five versions, from Atrahasis and Gilgamesh XI to Genesis, compared scene by scene. Last, Jubilees 10: the spirits of the giants, and the book of remedies Noah hands to Shem.

    SOURCES 1 Enoch 9–16 · Atrahasis · Eridu Genesis · Gilgamesh XI · Genesis 6–9 · Berossus · Jubilees 10 · Genesis Apocryphon · Jude · 2 Peter

  4. PART FOURchapters 10–12

    The Sealed Map

Enoch's tour in 1 Enoch 17–27 read as an ancient map of the world: the storehouses of the winds, the prison of seven stars, the four chambers of the dead. Then the Astronomical Book — six gates in the east, six in the west, a 364-day year — set against the Babylonian MUL.APIN and the Qumran calendar, including where it fails.

    SOURCES 1 Enoch 17–27 · 1 Enoch 72–82 (Astronomical Book) · Babylonian Map of the World · MUL.APIN · Job 38 · Daniel · Descent of Inanna · 4 Ezra · Jubilees

  5. PART FIVEchapters 13–15

    The Return

Traditions of forgetting — the Hymn of the Pearl, Plato's Meno, the Popol Vuh — then Enoch's two schedules of history: the Apocalypse of Weeks and the Animal Apocalypse with its seventy shepherds. Why Nibiru is not a planet, why no date can be calculated from these texts, and how the books came back to light at Nag Hammadi in 1945 and Qumran in 1947.

SOURCES Apocalypse of Weeks (1 Enoch 91, 93) · Animal Apocalypse · Book of Parables · Daniel 7 · Jude · War Scroll · Hymn of the Pearl · Plato, Meno · Popol Vuh · Berossus

THE SOURCES

About this collection

The Sealed Earth is built from texts you can open yourself: 1 Enoch — the Book of the Watchers, the Book of Parables, the Astronomical Book, the Animal Apocalypse and the Apocalypse of Weeks — with Jubilees, Genesis, Daniel, the Book of Giants and the other Aramaic Enoch fragments from Qumran, Atrahasis, Enuma Elish, the eleventh tablet of Gilgamesh, the Eridu Genesis, the Sumerian King List and Berossus. Each chapter says which text a passage comes from — often which chapter or tablet — what language it survives in, Ge'ez, Greek or the Aramaic of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and how damaged it is. It also tells how these books came back: James Bruce's manuscripts from Ethiopia in 1773, Richard Laurence's translation in 1821, George Smith's flood tablet in 1872, Qumran in 1947.

No text is invented. Where the sources disagree, both versions are given; where a reading is the author's own, it is marked as his. You can check every source by opening the originals.

ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Is it narrated, or do I have to read?

It is an audiobook. Press play and listen — in the evening before sleep if you like. The PDF edition comes with it, in case you want to look something up.

Where do these texts come from? Is it made up?

No. It draws on surviving texts: 1 Enoch, Jubilees, Genesis, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Atrahasis, Gilgamesh and others. Each chapter names the text a passage comes from — often the chapter or tablet — so you can check it for yourself. Where something is the author's own reading, he says so.

Is this religious? Am I being sold a belief?

No. The book reports what the sources say and where they agree. What you make of it is yours.

How long is the complete edition?

Eighteen hours of listening — 15 chapters in five parts, plus a book of 372 pages. The opening audiobook runs 1 hour 45 minutes and is included free in the bundle.

How do I get it?

The download link arrives by email the moment you pay. The files are yours for good and play any time, with or without internet.

Do I have to install anything or sign in anywhere?

No. You download the files and play them on your phone, your computer, or wherever you listen to music.

What if I do not like it?

If the collection is not for you, write within 30 days and I will refund you. No questions.
